The Ultimate Guide to the Empty Quarter Abu Dhabi: Discovering the Magic of Liwa

Explore the Rub’ al Khali from Abu Dhabi

If you want to hear your heartbeat loud and clear, the silence in Rub Al Khali is where you should be. Occupying an area roughly twice the size of Germany in the Arabian Peninsula, the Empty Quarter stands as the world’s largest undisturbed sand desert. Its landscapes have inspired poets and hidden its secrets for over thousand years. The dunes here rise gigantically resembling other-worldly structures.

Nestled in the corner of this grand emptiness is the Liwa Oasis, a ribbon of fertile earth that has nourished voyagers for generations. It is not only the aboriginal home of the Bedouins but also the homeland of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family. Today, its golden sands and dunes reaching heights over 300 meters are a playground for anyone willing to go beyond the concrete jungle.

No guidebook covers the truth: Liwa demands respect. It is not the tamed, outskirt dunes of Al Khatim. It is the deep desert that requires skill, preparation and a guide who can read the sands just like reading a map.

At Desert Safari Abu Dhabi, we have spent years earning the right to call ourselves Liwa specialists. Our drivers are not merely navigating these dunes; they were raised in their shadow. Our camps are more than just somewhere to sleep; they also honor the Bedouin hospitality traditions that have been passed down through the years. And our guests don’t only go to the Empty Quarter. They return home with sand on their shoes and memories to share for the rest of their lives.

Whether you want that perfect shot at golden hour, experience the thrill of climbing the gigantic Moreeb dune or just want a relaxing night under the clear starry sky, this guide will help you navigate the majesty of the Empty Quarter.

What Is the Liwa Desert? The Empty Quarter Explained

From the red sands of Sharjah’s Al Faya Desert to the vast expanses of Dubai’s Lahbab Desert, nothing prepares you for the expanse of Liwa.

The Geography of Giants

Being just 220 kilometers away from Abu Dhabi city, you can get to Liwa with a 2.5-to-3-hour drive. While most parts of the UAE desert is a sea of dunes as far as the eye can see, Liwa is popular not only as the gateway to the Rub Al Khali but also for its megadunes. The most mega dune is Tal Moreeb (Moreeb dune), a favorite for adventurous off-roaders because it rises 300 meter high with a slip face of 50-degrees.

Flora, Fauna, and the “Singing Sands”

Don’t be fooled by the name Empty Quarter because it is not at all empty. Flora like the hardy Ghaf tree and desert hyacinths, to name a few are scattered about. You might even be lucky enough to spot the Arabian Oryx or a quick sand Gazelle. One of Liwa’s most charming yet haunting feature is its ‘singing sands’, a low-frequency hum caused by sand grains sliding down dunes.

When is the Best Time to Visit Liwa?

Timing is everything in the desert.

  • Peak Season (October to March): This is the “golden window.” Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C, and nights are crisp and cool. It is perfect for camping and long treks.
  • Shoulder Season (April & September): It starts to get warm, but early morning or sunset tours remain comfortable.
  • Summer (May to August): Temperatures can soar above 50°C. While the dunes look stunning, outdoor activity is limited to climate-controlled vehicles and brief photo stops.

Practical Information: Planning Your Trip

How to Get to Liwa

Although you can rent a car and drive the E11 and E45 highways to the Liwa Oasis yourself, we strongly advice against it. Even seasoned 4×4 drivers may find themselves “crested” on a dune in a matter of minutes due to the Empty Quarter’s infamously fine and soft sand. Pickup from any location in Abu Dhabi is included in our trips, so you can unwind and take in the view as our skilled drivers navigate the roads.

  • The desert air is incredibly dry, even throughout the winter. Make sure to keep yourself well-hydrated with the unlimited water that is provided on all our tours!
  • There are many local farms and communities throughout Liwa. Make sure to dress modestly (covering our knees and shoulders) to respect the local culture.
  • Sustainability is a core practice we follow by adhering to a strict “Leave No Trace” policy. The environment of the Empty Quarter is delicate, we protect it by carrying out whatever we bring in.

  • Closed-toe shoes: While sandals are fine for the camp, sneakers are better for climbing dunes.
  • Personal Medication: The nearest pharmacy is quite a distance from the deep desert.
